Acropolis Organics Q & A

What makes Acropolis Organics Olive Oil different from other olive oils?

There are three factors that set Acropolis Organics Olive Oil apart from our competitors. These are:

Growing Conditions
Acropolis Organics harvests olives in the Kolymvari Chania region on the island of Crete. This area is blessed with mineral-rich soil and year-round sun - perfect conditions for growing olives. Because Acropolis Organics' groves are located on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea, the salt air that wafts through the region adds a unique peppery flavour to our olives.

While commercial olive oil manufacturers often rely on 'blended' olive oil, Acropolis Organics grows - without the use of pesticides or chemicals - and presses a single variety of koroneiki olives. These olives are renowned as the finest class of olives for making olive oil.

Quality Control
Acropolis Organics olive oil farmers and producers are artists in the way that wine makers are in Bordeaux France, or chocolatiers are in Switzerland. From tending the fields, to hand-picking the olives at harvest time, to the first cold pressing of the olives on the same day: every step of olive oil production is handled with meticulous care.

Taste
First cold pressed from koroneiki olives - thought by experts to produce the purest olive 'fruit juice' - Acropolis Organics' olive oil has a distinct yet delicate bouquet. The unique white soil and sea breeze swept hills of Crete give the oil its fruity flavour and slightly peppery finish. It's light yet rich taste is unparalleled.

Where does the olive tree and olive oil originate from?

The origin of the olive tree can be traced back to 3,500 B.C., the Minoan period, on the island of Crete. By 1600 B.C. residents of Crete were extracting the precious oil from the fruit of the olive with the invention of the world's first olive press. Popularity of the olive and it's 'liquid gold' gradually spread to other regions including Syria, Iran, Palestine and Israel.

Today the oldest olive tree - thought to be over 3,500 years of age - continues to grow in the Koymvari Chania area. Its legendary branches are still used to crown victorious Olympic champions.

Who is behind Acropolis Organics?

Acropolis Organics is an independent business owned and operated by the Tsiriotakis family. For generations, they have prided themselves on producing some of the finest organic olive oil in the world. From growing to importing, the family monitors every stage of production to ensure the highest standards are met.

What does the Acropolis have to do with olive oil?

Legend has it that Athena and Poseidon were both challenged by Zeus to put forth a gift to the citizens of Attica. While a swat of Poseidon's trident produced salt water from a stone, Athena retaliated by striking her spear on the holy rock of the Acropolis to create the first olive tree. Impressed by her resourcefulness and generous gift, Attica was renamed Athens in honour of the goddess. From these legendary beginnings hails the Acropolis Organics name.
